Technology Development is useful for a family of products
rather than a particular product. To understand this, consider an
automotive braking system. If a manufacturer makes 3 models of cars,
should the braking system optimization be conducted 3 times? Although
this is often the case, Technology Development suggests that the braking
system be optimized as a technology. Once that is done, the braking
system can be adapted to other model or sizes.
Technology Development is an extension of Robust Design where laboratory conclusions which can be reproduced in the factory
with higher noise level in the manufacturing process.
Robust Design is based on the 2-Step process. Technology Development
is one level higher although it still involves the 2-step process. The
can be understood if one thinks of Robust Design as optimizing points
(of order zero) while Technology Development optimizes straight lines
(of order one). Indeed future techniques could be developed to optimize
curves (of order 2 or higher).

		         Reduce Variability |
				1. Maximize linearity

                  2. Minimize variability

                  3. Maximize sensitivity

Technology Development must be started simultaneously with product planning.
Once such technology is developed a new product design can be completed by tuning. The redundancy of individual products or process development can be avoided.

The figure below shows New Product: Traditional
Development where the entire optimization process (Product
Design, Tolerance Design, and Tuning) is repeated for every new
product. This is not a good method because Tolerance Design and
Tuning, both of which increases costs, are done at an early R&D
				stage.

The figure below shows New Product: Technology
Development where the full optimization process is done only once (or as
necessary). R&D in Technology Development approach to New Product
Development is based on Robust Design and Technology Development. This
is a good method because in the
        - R&D stage

              - Technology Development is focused

 - Parameter Design is exhausted

 - Tuning research is done (but NO tuning is done)

         - Manufacturing stage

              - Tolerance Design is done in this stage

 - Tuning is done in this stage

For new products, only Tolerance Design and Tuning need
to be done. Thus, Technology Development can be used to optimize a family of
	products. |
