PWI – Process Work Instruction Introduction

In order to remain ISO 9000 compliant, an organization must maintain the structure of the Quality Management System (QMS). About four kinds of documentation are needed for the implementation of ISO 9000: procedures, process plans, work instructions and quality records.

Work instructions are the lowest level of required procedural documentation for an ISO 9000 compliant Quality Management System (QMS). At their most basic level, work instructions explain, step by step, how a task is performed. Work instructions are not required for every task related to quality, rather only those which explain the manner of production, installation and servicing, and whose absence would adversely affect quality

Work instruction is the actual instructions for performing tasks that affect the quality standards of the organization. Theoretically there have to be work instructions for every activity that affects the quality of the product. Unlike procedures, work instructions are meant for only one person or position. This level of documentation should be very detailed on "how" to accomplish a specific job, task or assignment.
